Can you get your sense of smell back with just 11 mg of this mineral a day?
The mineral zinc is an antioxidant. It helps clear up fungal and other infections. It is antagonistic to cold germs and works well to shorten the duration of colds. Zinc inhibits rhinovirus replication-the most common cause of the common cold.
It is the active ingredient in many skin remedy products, dandruff shampoos, and cold and throat medications.
Uses
It is important for wound healing, a strong immune system, growth, taste, smell, and a healthy prostate. A zinc deficiency can lead to prostate disorders which can lead to prostate cancer.
Deficiency Symptoms
A deficiency causes symptoms such as white spots on nails, loss of sense of smell and taste, weight-loss, poor appetite, dry skin, dandruff, slow healing of wounds, and hair loss. There is a debate on whether a zinc deficiency causes stretch marks during times of rapid growth (pregnancy, teenage years).
It has been used to treat body odor and acne.
High intake of zinc from food is associated with a reduced risk of Crohn’s disease.
Food Sources
It is found in red meat, liver, poultry, seafood, eggs, dairy products, whole grains, legumes, nuts, seeds, soybeans, lecithin, alfalfa, brewer’s yeast, parsley, rose hips, but the best source is oysters.
Recommended doses
Several Health Organizations recommend the following doses for adults:
Men 11 mg/day
Women 8 mg/day
Pregnant 11 mg/day
Breastfeeding 12 mg/day
Large doses of zinc can weaken the immune system.
